STELLA Project: Youth, Sport and Sustainability

Sustainability

True sustainability education goes beyond awareness: it cultivates long-term habits, systemic thinking, and a sense of shared responsibility. Within this framework, the STELLA Project aims to enhance environmental education among youth, provide educators with effective tools, and inspire behavioural change through sport.

Even in regular practice, sport naturally teaches the foundations of sustainability. Through teamwork, athletes learn shared responsibility and cooperation; training builds respect for limits and the efficient use of resources like time, energy, and effort. Fair play fosters ethical awareness, while persistence and long-term goals mirror the commitment needed for sustainable living. By experiencing balance, discipline, and mutual care on the field, young people develop attitudes that reflect the principles of sustainability in everyday life.

Beyond environmental outcomes, sustainability through sport develops essential transversal skills – critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership. These abilities are crucial for modern citizenship and align with broader European youth strategies that encourage young people to act as changemakers in their communities.

In conclusion, embedding sustainability into sport and youth work requires active learning, non-formal education, youth-led initiatives, and cross-sector partnerships. The STELLA Project provides a practical and inspiring model for how these elements can come together. By combining the energy of sport with the purpose of sustainability, it empowers a new generation to grow not only as athletes or students, but as responsible citizens and environmental stewards capable of shaping a more sustainable future.
