We are excited to share that we recently hosted the second online workshop of the Premieres of Diversity project! Bringing together more than 35 participants for another engaging 90-minute session, this workshop built on the foundations of our first meeting while diving deeper into the complexities of diaspora and cultural representation.
During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to:
– Examine how media shapes perceptions of diaspora, with a focus on TV news and infotainment. Together, we explored how narratives often frame migration through a “threat and security” lens, using terms that can emphasise fear, numbers, and impersonality.
– Critically reflect on stereotypes and binary oppositions frequently present in public discourse, such as “natives vs. immigrants,” and how selected media narratives can reinforce simplified or misleading associations.
– Understand how audiovisual storytelling influences cultural memory, highlighting the importance of responsible and inclusive representation in shaping public opinion.
– Engage in meaningful discussions around how these narratives can be challenged, promoting more balanced, human-centred perspectives on migration and diversity.
This second workshop marked an important step forward in the project’s journey, encouraging participants not only to understand diaspora more deeply, but also to question the narratives that surround it.
The Premieres of Diversity project continues to grow thanks to the collaboration of Kopin Malta, Associazione ValIda, EKOgreece, Südwind, Ecepaa, and Le LABA.
We’re already looking forward to the next steps of this journey, stay tuned for more insights, discussions, and opportunities to engage!
